- Wintry day at the Slieve Russell | Date Submitted: Monday 7th April 2008 |
Few members turned out to compete for the annual Frank Reihill Memorial Cup, but those that attended were generally happy with the conditions - windy and cold BUT dry. Pauric Geogeghan was defending the trophy he won last year but he was outgunned this year by Vinny Smith who recorded a great 34 points in the conditions which included two birdies (almost three) and one broken pitching iron. A brilliant wedge shot into the eleventh gave Vinny a five foot put for his first birdie, while a 100 metre pitch to the par 5 thirteenth got the same result. He also left another birdie put an inch from the hole over the water at the sixteenth.
Damien Curran carded 32 points and a butcher... He hit a tree wood which rebounded and hit his playing partner Pauric - not Pauric's first strike at this game. Damien was rewarded with the high category prize while Brendan Allen took the low category prize with the same score.
The next outing for the society will be to Dungannon Golf Club at the start of May - a course we have enjoyed playing over the years (watch here for the date of this outing)
Members were told on the day that this year's weekend away will be to Co Meath in June, playing the excellent Headfort Golf Club on the way. Other information on this will follow.

- 2008 season is underway | Date Submitted: Sunday 20th January 2008 |
There was a good turnout at the recent AGM in the Oak Barrell, a spread of all age and handicap groups.
The committee charged with overseeing the coming year was elected - some new blood has been drafted in to resurrect flagging attendances, while some of the 'older' stock were maintained on a consultative basis.
The committee include:
Secretary: Sean Curran; Assistant Secretary: Vinny Smith
Captain: Mark McAdam; Vice Captain: Collie Curran
President: Brendan Allen
Treasurer: Damien Curran; Assistant Treasurer: Rory McCauley
Handicap Secretary: Brendan Allen
We wish all members of the committee a very successful year in their new posts
The members agreed a number of motions, as follows:
1. Annual membership to remain at £30 and all members to be paid up by the second outing (April)
2. Members are asked to encourage new members to come along
3. Visitors - a member may invite a guest on one occasion only - if guest wishes to attend any more then they must join
4. Members are requested to abide by all dress-code rules which apply at courses, including footwear and appropriate dress for entry to clubhouses
5. Outing costs will be held at £35/€50 for all outings this year.
6. Frank Reihill perpetual cup will be competed for at the April outing in the Slieve Russell (provisional date: April 6th)
7. Conor McKenna perpetual cup will be competed for at the August outing at Rossmore Golf Club (provisional date: August 10th)
8. Fundraising: suggestions included Sports quizes, Darts competitions and Race nights. Any race night will be held in October / November. embers should note that the actual cost of some outings will be above the amount stated above and it is important that all try to raise as much at these fundraisers to keep outing costs down. Members are also urged to seek sponsorship for outings where possible - appropriate advertising will be given to any such sponsorship obtained
Provisional outings for the coming season:
(Please note some outings may be on Saturday to allow for some who may not be able to attend on Sundays)
March 8/9: Bundoran Golf Club
April 6: Slieve Russell Golf & Country Club (Frank Reihill Cup)
May 11: Dungannon Golf Club
June: TBA - possible weekend away - venue to be decided
July 5/12: Omagh Golf Club
August 10: Rossmore Golf Club (Conor McKenna Cup)
September 7: Castle Hume Golf Club (captains day)
October 4: Castlecoole Golf Club
November: Turkey competition
Before closing it was proposed to look into moving the weekend outing to September - which would reshuffle some outings.

- Happy New Year to all our Members and Readers | Date Submitted: Monday 31st December 2007 |
New Year's Eve and Christmas is as far away as ever again. Some of you might be delighted it is over, others may have enjoyed it so much you just don't want it to end. Where do you fit in? Whichever category you fit into it is now time to turn our attention to the golfing year ahead.
The first thing to be done is to elect a new Captain and his committee. All members will shortly be receiving notification of the upcoming AGM and I urge as many members as possible to attend. If you want your voice to be heard then you should be there.
You needn't feel pressurised to take a seat on the committee but your input would be welcomed. We need suggestions for outings in 2008 - maybe somewhere you would like to play or ideas about how to increase attendances in 2008. Some members think that outings have become too serious and the day can become too long. What do you think? If you are not able to attend then email your suggestions to me at brendanallen51@hotmail.com
Happy New Year and have a good fun golfing one
