- Tootsie wins Shannonside | Date Submitted: Tuesday 13th July 2010 |
| There was a low turnout at the picturesque course in Carrick-on-Shannon where the conditions were perfect for golf. Scoring was modest on the day except for the overall winner Tootsie who came home with an excellent score of 37 points. His nearest contender was the captain Paraic Geoghegan who racked up 32 points to claim the low category prize, not bad for someone who has just been docked 3 shots for a score of 63 in a club competition. There was a very popular winner in the high category when a very surprised Mark (Dozey) McAdam was awarded this prize. Mark was also delighted to hand over the baton for Mrs O'Neill's class to Isaac. Our next outing will be held at Rossmore Golf Club in Monaghan on Sunday 8th August. The first tee has been booked for 10.00am and members will be competing for the Connor McKenna Memorial Trophy, which is currently in the hands of our captain Paraic. The captain is making arrangements for his outing in September at Concra Wood in Castleblayney. It is important that anyone wishing to attend this outing contacts Paraic to book their place. It should also be noted that only members who have attended at least two outings this year will qualify for the Captain's Prize. | |
- 12th Weekend in Carrick-on Shannon | Date Submitted: Wednesday 30th June 2010 |
| The next outing for members will be held at Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club on Sunday 11th July. Tee- time is 10.30am. Members should remember our visit here last year on the same weekend, well looked after by the Club. Those who attended were full of praise for the club. We have a great Sunday organised for you, so why not come along and enjoy a round of golf at a very picturesque setting and then settle down to watch Fermanagh V Armagh in the qualifiers. If you can take any more sport after that you could stay to watch the World Cup final or just head back towards home to watch it in one of the local viewing stations, The following day will be a bank holiday, so no excuses about having to get up early. Could you plan the weekend any better? This event qualifies for Golfer of the Year points, at present being led by Joe Curran with Brendan and Paudie close on his heels. Members should note that we need to confirm numbers for this outing as a result of the May / June outings. Please inform us if you intend to attend OR not asap. The cost of the outing to members will be €35-40 max. | |
- Citywest Cancelled | Date Submitted: Wednesday 9th June 2010 |
| Due to lack of interest it has been decided to cancel this outing. A number of circumstances have dictated this outcome and we must apologise to those who have shown interest and were looking forward to the outing and also to the lads at mygolfsociety.ie for all their help in organising the event. We are in the process of trying to recover the deposit which had to be paid (this is not guaranteed). The outing to Killymoon was held on the best golfing day of the year, some members indicated that they were unable to attend, others just didn't turn up. Another deposit lost. It is no secret that Damian had to travel all the way to Killymoon for an event which didn't happen. Members should be a little more considerate of the efforts to which the organising committee have to go in arranging these outings; prizes, phone calls etc. | |
- Enda Remembered at the Russell | Date Submitted: Sunday 25th April 2010 |
| There was a great turnout at the first Enda Maguire Memorial Tournament with Enda's wife Tina and son Callum presenting the prizes in the clubhouse. The Society had invited a number of guests because of their close links with Enda. On the day the guest prize was won by Stevie Collins with a score of 39 points. The day started with a light shower but cleared up before anyone teed off and all enjoyed the day at the Russell. All that is except Cormac who had to battle with his buggy which seemed to have a mind of its own and refused to go the direction its driver wanted. Joe Curran and Leo Herbert came in with the best scores on the day - 38 points with Joe becoming the first recipient of Enda's trophy with a better back nine. Leo had an excellent score of 23 points on the front nine but was unable to maintain it - maybe he got ahead of himself as he turned for home and started thinking of the winning post. His endeavours were however rewarded with the low category prize while his old nemesis Paraic took the high category prize. At the prize ceremony there was a new category introduced, affectionately referred to as Mrs O'Neills Class. This prize was claimed by Mark McAdam who retains it till the next outing when it will be handed on to the winner at Killymoon in May (23rd - tee time 11.30am). Tina presented Joe with the trophy for the best score on the day and Joe got so excited at winning it that he duly dropped it. Tootsie said a few words on behalf of the Society to express the high regard that Enda was held in the Society. The Captain Paraic finished off the evening by presenting Tina and Callum with a picture frame containing some memories of Enda's time as a member of the Society. Enda's first anniversary Mass was held at Teemore on Saturday evening and was attended by a number of members of the Society who met with the Maguire family afterwards at the graveside. | |
